Lake George NY Leaders Meet to Discuss Forming Sports Tourism Alliance

A group of local officials, businesses, venue owners and representatives from the Lake George (NY) Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Convention and Visitors’ Bureau are teaming up to discuss establishing a year-round destination for youth sports tournaments and amateur athletic groups.

The initiative is spearheaded by Kristen Hanifin, Special Events and Convention Sales Director for the bureau, says forming a group to develop and expand the concept will result in enhanced communication among stakeholders to create a unified brand presence when trying to attract larger amateur athletic groups to the area.

In a recent white paper by Hanifin, “The CVB has recognized over the years that the sports tourism market is one which continuously demonstrates increased growth, and according to NASC (National Association of Sports Commissions), in 2015 showed visitor spending related to sport tourism to be $9.45 billion, up five percent from 2014. In looking at the economic impact of sports on our regions, the CVB has estimated that in 2016, the overall economic impact of the sports market to the Lake George Region was around $20 million.”

This year the Lake George area will host a pro-am beach volleyball tournament and the Arsenal Schools have chosen Golden Goal Sports Park as its official North American location for 2017, further showing the acceptance of the region as a year-round destination.
