New Youth Sports Complex Makes Abilene a Top Pick

Abilene is where champions are made. It’s a sports city. The competitive culture has produced an impressive lineup of remarkable athletes, thanks to its commitment to creating winning sports programs for athletes of all ages.

Now Abilene is upping its game. The Abilene Youth Sports Authority is building the Dodge Jones Youth Sports Center. The 55,500-square-foot, multi-sport complex is set to open in Winter 2019, offering athletes access to four regulation basketball courts, eight volleyball courts, meeting space and state-of-the-art audio-visual system, among other amenities.

The new space off Interstate 20 is a welcome addition to Abilene’s impressive lineup of facilities: 18 football fields, 39 basketball courts, 35 volleyball courts, 113 tennis courts, seven golf courses, four disc golf, 24 soccer fields, 30 softball and 30 baseball fields and seven sites for track and field.

Sports event planners know it’s a winning strategy to pick destinations with premier venues, amenities, attractions and experienced, enthusiastic support staff. Perched in the heart of the Texas Plains, Abilene offers a convenient location with a friendly, West Texas attitude.

Throw in ample dining options, both local flavor and familiar favorites, family-friendly attractions, affordable accommodations, and an experienced planning team, and it’s easy to see Abilene is a low-hassle, high value sports destination.

The action doesn’t stop after the last whistle blows. There’s plenty to do in Abilene to keep athletes, coaches and fans entertained off the field.

Visiting sports teams should not miss Frontier Texas! This unique museum features life-sized holographic figures. The story of the Texas frontier comes to life through the multi-media exhibits, and guests can come face-to-face with some of the most influential figures in Texas history. Families  also should take some time to wander around the Cultural District, filled with museums, galleries and sculptures based off storybook characters.

Head to the Abilene Zoo, which houses over 1,000 animals representing 250 species. Kids can take a ride on the Safari Express Train and explore one of the many zoo exhibits, including the Wetlands Boardwalk and the Caribbean Cove. Players can cool off at the Adventure Cove Aquatic Center, which features a leisure pool with a zero-depth beach entry, a lazy river, and two water slides.
