EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Big Snow, the much anticipated indoor ski facility at the American Dream megamall in New Jersey, has finally opened. Olympic champion downhiller Lindsey Vonn took the first official run down the only indoor slope in North America.
After Vonn’s run, she rendered her verdict to news crews from all over the tri-state area. “It was actually really good — I mean, I’ve never skied indoors before, so I don’t have a reference, but it was great,” she said.
Big Snow is one of the anchor attractions in the American Dream megamall. The operators can make 5,500 tons of real snow per day and keep the facility at 28º F, even in the summer.
The ski slope itself is 16 stories high with a 160-foot vertical drop and measures 180,000 square feet. Big SNOW is managed by the same group that runs Mountain Creek Resort in Vernon, N.J.
First considered back in 1996, the American Dream megamall didn’t break ground until 2004. Triple Five, the new ownership group, projects the attraction will draw 40 million visitors annually to the three-million-square-foot space, set to be fully operational by March 2020.
When complete, the project will include 450 stores and restaurants and 15 entertainment options, including a DreamWorks Water Park, a Nickelodeon Universe, a Legoland Discovery Center, a regulation ice rink and an aquarium.
There are more than 30 indoor ski facilities around the world. Look for more coverage in the February issue of SportsEvents Magazine.
